Standard window sizes
A window is made to the size of the opening, not the other way round. But some sizes come up so often that they have practically become standard — and it helps to know where your opening falls.
The most common sizes
| Size | Sashes | Where it is most often found |
|---|---|---|
| 60×60 cm | 1 | Bathroom, store, pantry |
| 80×120 cm | 1 | Kitchen, a smaller room |
| 100×120 cm | 1 | A room in a flat |
| 120×140 cm | 2 | Living room, the standard in apartment buildings |
| 140×140 cm | 2 | Living room in a new-build |
| 180×140 cm | 2 | A large opening, often with a fixed pane |
| 240×140 cm | 3 | A three-sash opening, living room |
| 80×220 cm | 1 | A balcony door |
Prices for all of these sizes are in the PVC window price table.
How to measure the opening
- Measure the structural opening — the hole in the wall, not the existing window. The old frame stays in the wall only when the new window is fitted over the existing frame.
- Measure the width in three places: top, middle, and bottom. Take the smallest figure.
- Do the same for the height — left, middle, right. The smallest figure is the one that counts.
- Also note the wall thickness, because the width of the internal window board depends on it.
- Photograph the opening from inside and outside. A photograph often says more than a number.
This measurement is for a guide quote. For production, we measure — a mistake of a centimetre on our measurement is our cost; on yours, it is yours.
Why two centimetres change the price
Profiles are supplied in lengths and cut to size, but the glass is ordered piece by piece. Crossing a certain dimension changes the glass thickness and the hardware category — and that is a step in the price, not a gradual rise.
That is why a window of 138 cm and a window of 142 cm can be in different price bands even though the difference looks trivial.
Non-standard sizes
Arched windows, triangular gables, round openings, and positions over two and a half metres fall outside every table. We make them, but they are priced only after measuring, and they usually need a drawing.
If you have an opening like that, send a photograph with the enquiry — it is often clear from the picture what is feasible.
