Roller shutters and insect screens: how to choose equipment you will actually use
In the evening you want an open window without mosquitoes, and early in the morning a darkened bedroom. On the patio it matters that the way through is simple, while in the living room you are trying to soften strong afternoon sun. Those requirements decide the choice of roller shutters and insect screens much more precisely than the colour of the frame. Plan the shutters and the screens together with the way the window opens. You can then check where the boxes, guides, and handles sit, and how you will reach every part while you use it and clean it.
Choose roller shutters for light and privacy
Think about when, and how much, you want to cover the window. In the bedroom the priority may be blackout. In a room where you work, the balance of daylight and glare on the screen matters more. On the ground floor, also consider privacy from the street.
External shading can help reduce unwanted solar gains, and the actual effect depends on the solution and the conditions on the building. This role of external sun protection is set out in the Department of Energy guide to choosing windows.
In the quote, ask for a description of the shutter, the position of the box, how it is operated, and access to the mechanism. If you are considering a motor, ask how power is provided and what happens in a power cut on the model offered.
Which insect screen suits which opening?
Answer a simple question first: do you walk through the opening, or do you use it only for airing?
Consider a fixed screen for a window that nobody walks through, and check how it is taken down and how you reach it for cleaning. Roller and pleated screens let you move the mesh aside when you do not need it. As an example of different ways of working, Schüco describes a vertical roller screen and a horizontal pleated screen in its window and sliding-door system.
The names of these types are a help when you choose. For your opening, check which versions are available, how much space they need, and whether they can be combined with the existing windows.
For a patio, check the way through in practice
Picture an ordinary moment: you are carrying a tray in one hand and opening the screen with the other. Then a child, or an older person, tries the same thing. Does the mesh move easily? Where is the handle? Is there a bottom guide to step over?
Before you order, ask to see the relevant model working. If you have pets, ask whether the mesh is suitable and how it is used. Do not assume that every mesh tolerates scratching or being leaned on.
A product photograph can show the look, but it does not show whether the handling suits you.
Check that every element works together
When you combine a roller shutter and an insect screen, settle:
- where their boxes and guides are fitted
- whether the window handle gets in the way of the mesh
- whether each sash can open as you planned
- how you reach the glass and the mesh to wash them
- whether any component reduces the usable way through, or the visible area of glass.
If you are adding the equipment later, send photographs of both the outside and the inside of the window. On a new-build, also state the planned finished look of the façade.
What affects the price of roller shutters and insect screens?
For a quote that can be compared, state the sizes, the number of elements, the type you want, the colour, and how they are operated. Ask whether measuring and installation are included, and ask for maintenance instructions for the product offered.
A good choice is one that fits your day: you can darken the room easily, you can step out onto the patio simply, and you can clean the parts without taking them apart unnecessarily.
