PVC or aluminium windows: how to choose for your home
You are choosing new windows and you hear two equally firm pieces of advice: “Take PVC” and “Aluminium is better”. The problem is that both skip the most important question: what kind of windows does your home actually need? The choice between PVC and aluminium windows starts with the size of the openings, the insulation required, the look you want, and the budget. A small kitchen window and a large glazed wall onto the garden do not have to be given the same priorities. Even the openings on a single building do not all have to have the same solution.
Start from the room, then choose the material
Make a short list of requirements for each room. In the bedroom, what may matter most is hearing less traffic. In the living room you want as open a view as possible. In the kitchen the window needs to open without moving things off the worktop.
A list like that is more useful than asking which material is “the best”. With it you can ask for two concrete options and check how well each one fits the way you actually live.
When to consider PVC windows
PVC is a sensible starting point when you are fitting out a flat or a house and you want to compare several configurations inside a set budget. Ask for a quote for the sizes you need, then check the profile, the glazing, the opening, and the finish.
Do not assume in advance that PVC means only a white frame. The Danito range also lists decorative foils, so bring the colour of the façade, the floor, and the internal doors into the conversation. Ask for a sample you can look at in daylight.
If you have large sashes or a particular way of opening, ask for confirmation that the configuration proposed is suitable for those sizes. The name of the material does not, by itself, answer that question.
When to consider aluminium windows
An aluminium system is worth including when the project needs large glazed areas or a particular look to the profile. Instead of judging from a photograph alone, ask for a drawing that shows the visible frame widths and how the glazed areas are divided.
For windows in heated rooms, the thermal break matters: the insulating part that reduces heat transfer through the metal frame. Aluminium conducts heat well, which is why the comparison has to be between clearly defined systems. Without a thermal break, an aluminium frame cools through to the room side in winter and becomes a place where condensation appears.
See the Danito aluminium windows and ask for a configuration for your building. Settle the opening style, the type of glass, and the performance you expect before you choose the colour and the details.
Compare insulation on the whole window
When you compare quotes, look for Uw, the value that describes heat transfer through the complete window. A lower value means less heat transfer under comparable conditions. Ug refers to the glass, so a figure for the glass should not be presented as a figure for the whole window. GEALAN explains the difference in its guide to U-values.
Ask for figures for the relevant sizes and configurations. A catalogue value for a reference element is not automatically the value of every window in your order.
Five questions that make the decision easier
| Your priority | What to ask for in the quote |
|---|---|
| Keeping to a budget | The total price for the same scope of equipment and work |
| A large area of glass | Confirmation of the permitted sizes and sash layout |
| Thermal insulation | Uw for the configuration proposed |
| Appearance | A sample of the finish, and a drawing of the visible profiles |
| Simple use | A diagram of the opening, and maintenance instructions |
Once these items sit side by side, the decision becomes much clearer. Pay extra for a feature you will use, and ask for anything that is not clear to be explained on the actual window.
Compare PVC and aluminium on your openings
Send the sizes and photographs of the building to the Danito team at office@danito.rs. Say that you want a comparison of a PVC and an aluminium option, so you can decide on the basis of quotes that can be compared.
